His Abode
By Fiza Pathan
He is in the meadows of the
Gangetic plains a land of fertility.
However he also resides in the desert of Rajasthan
where the genies emerge from the lamp
which was rubbed three times by Aladdin’s hand.
He resides in the temples of the Vaishnavites
as well as the temples of the Shaivites.
He resides in every corner of Lord Krishna’s abode in Mathura
and in the brow of Rama, the son of the east.
But he also resides in the coasts where the fisherman
spread his net and fished out a mermaid
instead of a mere fish.
He resides in the Himalayas
the barrier of the land of the enshrined idols.
You will find Him in every grain
of black soil that covers the dark plateau.
You will also find him in the land of the Avatar Kali
with her blood stained tongue and her garland of skulls.
He is in the tea plantations of the Nagas
who worship the snake as a god.
He is also in the deltas that yawn their
holy rivers into the Bay of Bengal.
He is in every word written on the stupa
of Asoka the King of Peace as well as
the engravings on the marble walls of the Taj Mahal.
He is also in every chant of the sanyasi sage who meditates
in the forests among the tigers and leopards.
You will find Him in the mosques of the great Muslim saints
and in the verses of the admirable Sage Kabir.
You will also find Him in the Kerala churches
covered with moss hailing the wonderful good news
that Saint Thomas the Apostle brought to its shores.
You will find him in every Hindu, Parsee, Muslim,
Sikh, Christian, Jain and Buddhist ─ you will
find Him in the light of the diya that calls forth
the Saviour at Deepavali, Eid, Christmas, Guru Nanak Jayanti,
Navroz, Buddha Purnima and Mahavira Jayanti.
For He is the everlasting essence and the seer of all ages
─ more than that He is present all over the world
… but his abode is only in India, the land of religions.
