Redden My Parched Lips
By Fiza Pathan
Why did you sing your sigh for another aeon?
Why does your voice chant into my nerves like a flute?
Yet why is my sky so dark and black, after you have said-you’re not coming back.
Now every sound I hear scratches my eardrums in pain,
Your words of hate are louder than the barking dog’s curse.
Why do you have to leave my world with all my luggage-and me all alone, in my sea of tears.
You were the one I wished to love forever, so I drink your gift of sorrowful teardrops in a cup of wine.
You were the one I needed most, to drown into another ocean of hopes.
But, you moved away-you said you moved the clouds towards my thunder.
The world you have left is yet untamed, this world is my heart and its King is you.
I can’t go on begging the drums of the afterlife for mercy, for the sages have always hated lovers.
So my betrothed one, this is my last adieu to you-set your sail and go away from this shore of my terrain.
But in heavens name let me know how to drown myself in red wine-how to cut my flesh to redden my parched lips.
