The Scholar’s Pen Nib by Fiza Pathan
The somber flame leaps up from my pen nib’s nonliving chest
Making me tell to you what remains untold.
The scholar is sleepy and the cats have got their dinner
So why run, let’s wait and gaze towards the fountain pen
That sprouts out ink blue lessons of old.
Coffee is served up to the table, rich and inviting for a taste
Softly you swoon afterwards into the land of sleep
While I am left alone to write down the couplet that has commenced.
Ideas engulf my weary mind with its ardent lust filled chase,
Come, awake! Let’s take this bargain and fly to the evergreen Chinese hills.
Why sleepest not you when we have the goddess of luxury to be our guide?
Hurry up! You stubborn one of my flesh, get up for heaven’s sake
And let’s rise up like lentil flames in a Buddhist monastery to the god of prosperity.
Pray with your mouth shut and your pen flowing
A sage’s only way to flatter the demi ones is his arrow piercing pen.
Dip the holy reed of ancient time in the dark inky shadow of the passing night
Save the next cauldron of thoughts for tomorrows more busy night.
