The Yearning for Heat
By Fiza Pathan
It is no longer a scandal but an unnamed secret,
You said you loved me, and then you left-that was all that mattered.
Never did my eyes cry, for the teardrops were hidden,
Somewhere deep within my sockets so dark.
You were the one dearest, who made these empty holes bleed
Red sad drops upon the shattered foundations of our poor love.
Why did you start the raging fire that burns within my breast,
If you did not wish to put it out before you left?
Then at least I would have carried some of my ashes away with me to the grave.
Cinders cry out your name now in the dead of the dark lover’s lonely night.
The screech owl hoots a yarn, about the mustiness of my tomb in the enchanted woods.
Like a hart, I bared my chest to your golden shaft-and you bruised me without batting an eyelid.
Now you travel the world over with your sweet smile and your dandy crop.
But here I stand watching the nights getting colder,
Although my heart freezes as it yearns for some heat once again.
